After taking a foul ball of his left palm, Royals catcher Salvador Perez left Monday’s game against the Mariners.
The initial X-rays were encouraging, a team spokesman said. But Perez was scheduled to get more tests. The initial diagnosis is a contusion.
Perez exited the game in the middle of the third inning. He had been pinch-hit for during the frame by backup Adam Moore. After the Royals finished batting, Perez ran out of the stadium, with trainer Nick Kenney in tow.
Perez wanted to remain in the game. But the need for caution was understandable, considering the importance of his health. Perez had departed the complex by the time the clubhouse opened to reporters.
“I actually told him myself,” starter James Shields said. “I was like ‘Just get out of here. There’s no sense in you coming back in the game.’”
He added, “It’s spring training. There’s no reason to push anything. He just had a little foul tip. But I think it should be fine.”
