Gorkys Hernandez hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday as Class AAA Omaha rallied for a 7-6 win over Oklahoma City and swept the playoff series.
The Storm Chasers trailed 6-2 at one point, but came back for the win in game three of the Pacific Coast League’s best-of-five American Conference playoff series.
Trailing 6-4, Omaha’s eighth-inning rally started with two outs as Paulo Orlando and Mitch Canham drew consecutive walks. Hernandez then crushed his homer to left field.
The Storm Chasers chipped away at a four-run deficit in the sixth inning. Ben Broussard and Lane Adams had consecutive singles to open the inning, and Rey Navarro’s double scored Broussard.
Oklahoma City turned a 5-2-4 double play on an Orlando infield grounder, but Omaha got a run home anyway on a subsequent wild pitch that scored Adams. That made it 6-4.
While starter Justin Marks struggled (he allowed six runs — five earned — on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings), the Storm Chasers bullpen was light’s out. Spencer Patton threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings and Maikel Cleto, 1-0, retired all six batters he faced.
Omaha advanced to the PCL championship series for the third straight year. That series is set to begin on Tuesday.
