Left-hander John Lamb had his best outing of the season, tossing seven shutout innings Thursday as High-A Wilmington beat Lynchburg 5-1.
Lamb, who once was regarded as the Royals’ top pitching prospect, had Tommy John surgery in 2011, then suffered a foot injury last year that limited him to 13 innings pitched. But on Thursday, he struck out eight, while allowing three hits and one walk.
In his three previous outings, Lamb had allowed 17 earned runs in 15 innings.
The Blue Rocks got all the runs they needed in the fourth inning. Daniel Mateo singled with one out and Lane Adams reached on an error. Cheslor Cuthbert singled home Mateo and Kenny Swab followed with a walk to load the bases.
After Jack Lopez’s sacrifice fly, Alex Hudak hit a two-run single to make it 4-0. After Lynchburg got a run in the top of the eighth, Cuthbert got the run back in their half with an RBI double.
