A pair of infielders will represent the Royals at next month’s Futures Game, with top prospect Raul Mondesi, Jr., and Cheslor Cuthbert both selected to play for the World squad.
Mondesi, a 19-year-old shortstop, is considered the most talented position player in Kansas City’s system. As the Royals pursue external upgrades before the July 31 trade deadline, Mondesi will be the most sought-after target for opposing clubs. Kansas City will, of course, be hesitant to even discuss a player of Mondesi’s preternatural talent.
Mondesi has missed the past week for Class AA Northwest Arkansas due to a recurrence of a back strain. Assistant general manager J.J. Picollo indicated Mondesi would return to action soon. In 32 games for the Naturals, Mondesi is hitting .270 with a .715 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.
Baseball America rated Mondesi the No. 28 prospect in the game before the season began.
Never miss a local story.
Cuthbert, 22, has been playing first base and third base for Class AAA Omaha. He entered Thursday hitting .268 with a .747 OPS for the Storm Chasers. He could play a utility role in the majors.
The Futures Game will be played in Cincinnati on July 12.
