Edinson Volquez looked as sharp as he has all spring in a 11-1 Royals victory over Houston. His final preseason appearance lasted only four innings, but Volquez still struck out seven Astros and kept his opponents off the board.
Volquez managed to lower his spring ERA to 6.33. He worked around five hits.
The Royals broke through in the fifth. After Omar Infante led off with a single, Jarrod Dyson laid down a bunt in front of the mound. Astros starter Scott Feldman threw to first where All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve dropped the ball. Infante took third. Altuve was charged with an error.
The mistake mattered. Infante scored when the next batter, Alcides Escobar, grounded into a double play. Mike Moustakas, the next batter, walked and stole second. He scored on a single up the middle by Lorenzo Cain.
Never miss a local story.
In the eighth, Eric Hosmer poked a two-run shot just high enough to reach the Crawford Boxes in left field. Outfield prospect Brett Eibner followed that with his sixth homer of the spring.
In the ninth, Dyson walked and went to second on Escobar’s ground-out. He scored on a double by Moustakas, who then scored on a single by Cain. After Eibner walked, Cain scored on a single by Salvador Perez. And Eibner and Alex Rios scored on Infante’s double. Dyson reached first on an error by reliever James Hoyt and Perez scored from third.
The Astros got their only run of the game in the bottom of the ninth against Royals reliever Greg Holland.
