The Royals granted veteran infielder Ryan Roberts his unconditional release, shortly after manager Ned Yost informed him he would not break camp as a member of the opening day roster.
The team wanted to give Roberts a chance to catch on with another team before the season begins.
There are now 35 players left in camp.
Roberts, 34, hit 25 homers for Arizona in 2009 and 19 again in 2011. But he had little chance of making the Royals, considering their glut of infielders and Yost’s preference for a fifth outfielder.
Never miss a local story.
Roberts hit .219 with a .577 on-base plus slugging percentage in 18 Cactus League games this spring.
