This is the funniest ice-cream sandwich story since “Arrested Development.”

Thing is, this apparently is a true story.

Tyler Maun at MiLB.com reported that Seattle catcher/designated hitter Jesus Montero was involved in a squabble with a Mariners’ cross-checker during a minor-league game Thursday in Boise, Idaho. Montero, who was in Boise with the Mariners’ short-season Class A team, the Everett Aqua Sox on a rehab assignment from a strained oblique.

The Seattle Times identified the cross-checker as Butch Baccala.

From Maun’s story: “Montero was coaching first base, and at the end of an inning, the unidentified crosschecker yelled at him to hustle off the field, according to Boise official scorer Liza Safford. Montero then headed to the AquaSox dugout on the third-base side.”

Montero showed up at spring training this year a little heavier than the Mariners would have liked, a fact this cross-checker must have remembered. (A cross-checker is a scout who compares prospects).

The cross-checker apparently pushed the envelope.

Again, from Maun’s story: “According to a game offical, the cross-checker then ordered an ice-cream sandwich and had it sent to Montero in the dugout, escalating the confrontation further. The official said Montero … approached the stands with a bat while screaming profanities and threw the sandwich at the cross-checker. Montero had to be pulled back from the stands by Everett pitching coach Nasusel Cabrera, Safford said.”

The Seattle Times reported that Baccala said the incident was being portrayed wrongly, but he wouldn’t offer any details as to what happened.

Suffice to say, Montero didn’t feel like this about an ice-cream sandwich:
