Across baseball, rosters will expand Monday. But for the Royals, and other clubs interested in playoff contention, a more intriguing deadline occurs the day before.
In order to be eligible for the postseason, a player must be added to the 40-man roster by 11 p.m. on Sunday. This is particularly important for the Royals, as many of the players they are considering for call-ups next month are not currently on the 40-man roster.
Brandon Finnegan, the left-handed, first-round pick, is not. Carlos Peguero, the masher in Class AAA Omaha, is not. Terrance Gore, the base-running specialist, is not.
So the Royals will need to clear some roster space soon if they want to position these players to contribute past September. At risk of losing a roster spot are pitchers like Aaron Brooks, Michael Mariot and Blake Wood, and perhaps even infielder Johnny Giavotella.
