Joe Buck’s name was trending on Twitter on Thursday, and it wasn’t for a good reason.
Fox announced that Buck would be calling the American League Championship Series games and some Royals fans were unhappy.
Adam Jones of Kansas City started a petition to have Fox remove Buck from the broadcasts, and by 8 p.m. Thurday it had nearly 4,000 signatures.
“Honestly, my friends (Pat and Chris) and I were just frustrated with that news this morning and wanted a way to vent,” Jones wrote in a Twitter message. “We put up the petition and sent out some tweets and it just kind of took off from there. So, yes, we were very surprised when it blew up like it did.”
And even bigger surprise came soon after.
That tweet from Jones obviously had 26 retweets at the time, and that has increased.
And Buck even had some fun with Jones.
“When Joe Buck said my full name in response to the question of who he was broadcasting with, that was definitely a surprise,” Jones wrote.
“I did wish I hadn’t phrased that tweet that has all of the favorites and retweets as ‘hate’ as it was not the feeling I actually wanted to get across. Just don’t like Buck’s MLB stuff,” he added.
Buck also addressed the perception that he has favorite teams, particularly when he is broadcasting games.
And Buck took time to have some fun with Kansas City fans:
As much fun as Buck was having on Twitter, it still didn’t sway Jones.
“I really didn’t have any strong opinion about him personally before or after,” he wrote. “I think he definitely seems good natured and able to self deprecate which is good :) I still don’t want to hear him call the game. Guess I’ll have to try to get tickets or turn the volume off :/”
