This remains one of the best-remembered tennis matches ever played.
On Sept. 20, 1973, Bobby Riggs faced off against Billie Jean King in the “Battle of the Sexes.” Riggs was an unabashed self-promoter who had beaten Margaret Court the previous year, and he boasted that although he was 55 years old, he could beat any female player.
More than 30,000 people were on hand for the match in the Houston Astrodome and an another 90 million people worldwide watched on television, according to History.com.
King, who was 29, trounced Riggs in three sets and took the $100,000 winner-take-all prize.
Never miss a local story.
That story is being told in a movie that will hit theaters on Sept. 22. Emma Stone will portray King, while Steve Carell plays Riggs. You can see the trailer above.
