I’ve heard from a few fans who wondered if the Royals didn’t make a mistake in not trying to sign Ben Zobrist during the offseason.
Here’s the thing: Even if the Royals had the financial power to bring Zobrist back, I don’t think he would have signed with Kansas City.
Zobrist basically said as much during a visit Monday to “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” The Cubs’ Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo were also on the show, and Fallon asked Zobrist about winning a World Series a year ago with the Royals and then leaving as a free agent.
“Also, you must be a little crazy or something, because you were on the Royals last year, they won the World Series and then you left,” Fallon said. “You left and went over to the Cubs. ... That must have been tough. What made that decision? And are you happy?”
Zobrist, who grew up in Eureka, Ill., said it was an easy decision to make.
“Yeah, of course I’m happy,” Zobrist said. “I was a free agent last year. I had a chance to choose a couple different places and well, I grew up, I was a small-town kid from Illinois, so No. 1, just trying to win a championship for my home state. I mean that was it. Also, Joe Maddon managed me in Tampa Bay as well for several years, so I wanted to win a championship with him, and of course, I mean, 108 years, an elusive championship, who wouldn’t want to try to win that championship? So of course, I had to choose Chicago.”
