"everyone should be free to choose their favorite team, everyone who roots for the Heat just because they’re good should also expect to be mocked. The Wizards helped out that effort on Wednesday night with a first-quarter ‘Bandwagon Cam.’ There were four or five images of folks in Heat gear"
Well done, Wizards. If you could only draft as well as you entertain. Also, and I know this blog is read by Royals employees, this would make an excellent gimmick when the Yankees and Red Sox come to Kansas City^.
^And if you could find it in your hearts to stop with the "Low Places" sing-along in the sixth inning, all the better.
You may have seen where the Chiefs are picking Notre Dame defensive end Stephon Truitt in the first round of Mel Kiper’s mock draft
Truitt is a hoss and would certainly help the Chiefs. I happen to think the Chiefs have far greater needs — Kiper’s analysis, strangely, is that "there really isn’t an above-average 3-4 DE on the (Chiefs) roster," but Tyson Jackson and Mike DeVito are both above-average 3-4 DEs — but the main point I want to make is this:
Mock draft, shmock draft.
It’s fine for a distraction from work, because those are always welcome, but last year Luke Joeckel was the Chiefs’ pick inKiper’s first mock draft
. Eric Fisher^ was going 11th, to the Chargers.
I’m not picking on Kiper here. He’s just the biggest name among many who do this. I look at these things as much as anyone, let’s just want to make sure we all understand what’s what. It’s interesting to get a general idea about what teams are looking at, but not much more.
^Fisher, as Terez points out here , could switch over to left tackle next season.
Speaking of mock drafts, Chad Ford’s new Big Board has Joel Embiid No. 1 overall, replacing KU teammate Andrew Wiggins, who goes to No. 2.
There will be plenty of time to talk about that, and Rustin has some good stuff about it here
, but today, what strikes me is that Wayne Selden is No. 20.
Selden has a lot of talent, a big body, and has started to play better but I can’t imagine an NBA GM feeling good about taking him 20th overall. He’s a very good jumper, but otherwise not as athletic as you’d like in an NBA guard, especially with lateral quickness and first step.
I am the first to scream out loud that I am no scout, just a guy in sweatpants typing up a blog post before I start on a column today^, but Jordan Clarkson looks like a better player to me. All the same disclaimers for NFL mocks fit here, but if this is really how NBA teams are thinking, Selden is going to have a very interesting decision after the season.
^K-State people, especially, keep an eye out.
So Andy Reid is the coach of the year
in the AFC, as named by the 101 Committee. Ron Rivera won the award in the NFC.
We went over this a few weeks ago
, but Reid deserves every award he gets. There are a lot of great candidates this year, and you can nitpick any of their cases, including Reid’s, but there is an enormous feel of overanalyzing here.
Reid took a team that won two games, and won 11, able to rest nearly everyone the last week of the season. He took a broken locker room and fixed it. He captained one of the great one-year turnarounds the NFL has seen.
Anyway, his challenge going forward will be just as great. Maybe greater. But this year, he deserves everything that goes his way.
