Pittsburg State shot putter Garrett Appier and Central Missouri’s Heavin Warner won national honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Appier, who went to Paola High, was named the men’s national field athlete of the year in Division II. He repeated his NCAA Division II outdoor championship with a record throw of 20.37 meters and holds each of the top 10 throws in Division II history.
Warner, from St. Joseph, Mo., was named the women’s national field athlete of the year. She was the high scorer in the Division II meet, setting a record in the hammer throw at 69.33 meters and finishing third in the shot and discus.
Pittsburg State head coach Russ Jewett was named women’s coach of the year after leading his program to the Division II team championship, and Gorillas assistant Brian Mantooth was named assistant coach of the year. Mantooth oversees the throws at Pittsburg State.
