Bill Snyder’s 16 goals for success have helped Kansas State win football games for years.
They also recently helped one K-State fan lose 40 pounds in six months.
Patrick Hines, a 25-year old K-State grad and Maize product, published a YouTube video chronicling his journey from 216 pounds to 176 pounds, citing Snyder’s 16 goals as motivation.
Never miss a local story.
“A conversation with my doctor and the second-hand advice of Bill Snyder gave me the push I needed to lose weight, eat better, and be happier,” is the description he uses for the video.
Hines, who describes himself as a K-State superfan and shares many pictures of himself at Wildcats games, began exercising last year in pursuit of a healthier life.
His first few workouts did not go well, and he considered quitting, until ...
“I saw a poster in my room with the K-State 16 goals on it,” he says in his video, entitled Every Workout a Wildcat “... An idea popped into my head that I could apply these 16 goals as motivation to keep working out and improving my health. I was going to have the commitment and discipline to doing the right thing on a consistent basis. The first month having that mentality, I lost 10 pounds.”
Snyder’s 16 goals are: commitment, unselfishness, unity, improve, be tough, self-discipline, great effort, enthusiasm, eliminate mistakes, never give up, don’t accept losing, no self limitations, expect to win, consistency, leadership and responsibility.
Hines said the goal “no self limitations” helped him the most.
“It made me realize that I can avoid complacency,” Hines wrote in an e-mail, “if I expect more out of myself every day.”
It also pushed him to continue exercising and to start lifting weights after he saw 176 on the scale and his doctor congratulated him on the transformation.
“If I can lose this weight,” he said, “why not tone my body up and get in the best shape of my life?”
The 16 goals are still pushing him today.
He ends the video with these words: “If you have a goal in life, just go after it. You should do it with everything you have.”
