The Rockhurst men’s soccer team’s quest for its first national title ended Thursday night in Pensacola, Fla.
The fifth-ranked Hawks lost 1-0 to 17th-ranked Cal Poly Pomona in the NCAA Division II national semifinals at the Ashton Brosnaham Sports Complex.
Alexander Turkson scored off a corner kick in the 84th minute. Rockhurst put four shots on target and was outshot 13-9.
“Our players gave all they could tonight. I thought we could have played better,” Rockhurst coach Tony Tocco said. “Our effort was good. Our execution was not very good.”
The Hawks finished 18-2-3 after making their second trip to the national semifinals in three seasons.
▪ Rockhurst junior defender Paul Dean of Overland Park was chosen a first-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association. On the women’s All-America team, Central Missouri sophomore goalkeeper Ana Dilkes was chosen to the first team and Jennies junior defender Abby Rhodes of Olathe made the second team.
▪ Rockhurst’s women’s volleyball team beat Lewis (Ill.) in five sets in the second round of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional on Friday in Big Rapids, Mich. The Hawks will play top-seeded Ferris State at 4 p.m. Saturday for a spot in the national quarterfinals Dec. 10.
NAIA soccer semifinals
The No. 10 seed MidAmerica Nazarene men reached the NAIA championship game with a 4-2 victory on Friday over Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) in Delray Beach, Fla. The Pioneers, 18-5-1, will play top-seeded Rio Grande (Ohio), 22-1, which beat No. 4 seed Missouri Valley 1-0 in the semifinals. The championship match is at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Also Friday, the fourth-seeded Benedictine women lost 3-1 in the semifinals to top-seeded Lindsey Wilson in Orange Beach, Ala.
NAIA volleyball tournament
No. 10 seed MidAmerica Nazarene lost a five-set elimination match to No. 7 Vanguard (Calif.) on Friday in Sioux City, Iowa. Later Friday, No. 4 seed Columbia beat No. 5 seed Biola (Calif.) in five sets in the quarterfinals. The semifinals and championship are Saturday.
