Missouri’s NFL Draft history under Gary Pinkel

Technically, the first NFL Draft pick of the Gary Pinkel era at Missouri was defensive end Justin Smith, who was selected No. 4 overall during the 2001 draft by the Cincinnati Bengals.
Of course, Pinkel had been hired as the Tigers’ head coach the previous November but never actually coached Smith, so he doesn’t get credit for that one.
Still, Missouri has racked up an impressive roster of NFL talent on Pinkel’s watch and should send another rock solid shipment into the NFL during the next three days.
The Tigers didn’t have any players drafted during two of Pinkel’s first three seasons as head coach.
The only players drafted during those first three years — wide receiver Justin Gage and defensive tackle Keith Wright — came in the fifth and sixth rounds of the 2003 NFL Draft.
A lot has changed since 2004.
Missouri has had six first-round picks in the last five drafts and boasts 23 NFL draft picks from Pinkel-coached teams, including 21 in the last 10 years with 11 of those selections in the first three rounds.
That doesn’t account for the undrafted Tigers who’ve found an NFL home either, including Chiefs quarterback Chase Daniel and wide receiver Danario Alexander among others.
St. Louis center Tim Barnes, wide receiver T.J. Moe, who recently signed with the Rams, and Chiefs cornerback Kevin Rutland also fall into that category.Missouri NFL Draft history, 2002-present
