While his Missouri teammates knew for months, Michael Sam didn’t reveal his sexual orientation to his father until days before he announced to The New York Times and ESPN that he is gay.
In a story published Tuesday by The Times
, Michael Sam Sr. said he was at a Denny’s to celebrate his birthday but “couldn’t eat no more” after his son texted him “Dad, I’m gay.”
“ so I went to Applebee’s to have drinks,” Sam Sr. went on to tell The Times. “I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment.
“I’m old-school. I’m a man-and-a-woman type of guy.”
Sam Sr. also told The Times that Deacon Jones “is turning over in his grave.” Jones was a Hall of Fame NFL defensive end, the same position Sam played at Missouri, earning unanimous All-America and SEC defensive player of the year honors.
