Bill Self says the way teammates treated Michael Sam helped MU’s success

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self on Monday addressed Missouri football star Michael Sam’s decision to announce that he is gay: “There’s a reason why Missouri had such a great season in football,” Self said. “… if you have the confidentiality of your entire team, in a way in which they did, that means you know they got each other’s back. So that to me, is one of the things that stood out.”

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self on Monday addressed Missouri football star Michael Sam’s decision to announce that he is gay:

“There’s a reason why Missouri had such a great season in football,” Self said. “Obviously, they had good players, and I’m not on the inside and know what goes on, but if you have the confidentiality of your entire team, in a way in which they did, that means you know they got each other’s back. So that to me, is one of the things that stood out.

“It takes a lot of courage and guts and, of course, somebody that stands up for their own convictions and how they feel, and I certainly applaud what was done yesterday.

“I don’t think anybody should ever have to live or hide behind who they are or how they feel.”

K-State basketball coach Bruce Weber also commented Monday:

“I just think the mindset has definitely changed,” he said. “People are much more open to it. The young man showed a lot of courage.”
