Iona senior guard Sean Armand wasn’t exactly impressed with Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins.
After Wiggins had 13 points on four-of-nine shooting in Kansas’ 86-66 victory over Iona on Tuesday night, Wiggins’ name showed up on headlines on ESPN’s SportsCenter.
“Of course this kid is the headline on espn,” Armand tweeted. “Overrated.”
Armand, who finished with 14 points on five-of-15 shooting, made a few headlines before the game — perhaps unfairly — by saying that Iona was coming to Allen Fieldhouse to win. (What else was he going to say?)
Iona coach Tim Cluess defended his player after the game.
“I was sitting right there at the airport,” Cluess told reporters at Allen Fieldhouse. “And the question was, ‘Are you guys going in there trying to keep it close or what?’ And Sean said, ‘Every game we play in, we go in to win, and this is not gonna be any different. We respect Kansas, we know how good they are, but if we were here to lose, we shouldn’t be playing the game.’”
“Unfortunately, they take one bit of it, put that out there, and (the media is) very creative.”
