Missouri Southern is one more upset away from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association baseball tournament championship.
The Lions advanced to the championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over top-seeded Missouri Western on Friday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The Griffons recovered for an 11-4 win over Pittsburg State in an elimination game Friday night, setting up a rematch. But Western will have to beat Southern twice Saturday for the title.
In the loss to Southern, Western scored all three of its runs in the first inning. Southern’s Tee Helsel was two for four with a run scored, Nicke Doughty went two for four with a RBI and Shaun Hoover hit a two-run double in the second.
Against Pitt State, the Griffons put up three three-run innings as Grant Fink went four for four and David Chew added a three-run homer.
