A few highlights from MU coach Gary Pinkel

’s weekly appearance on the SEC coaches conference call Wednesday morning:

*Pinkel reiterated that he doesn’t expect junior quarterback

James Franklin

to play against Kentucky on Saturday. Franklin sprained his MCL against Vanderbilt two weeks ago.

“He’s just jogging around a little bit,” Pinkel said, “(but) we don’t anticipate him playing.”

Pinkel, however, said he expects Franklin to return for MU’s Nov. 3 road test against Florida.

“James will almost certainly be back for the next week,” he said.

Because Franklin is expected to return soon, Pinkel said the Tigers have to be careful about what they do with true freshman

Maty Mauk, who is currently being redshirted but is the backup quarterback this week if redshirt freshman Corbin Berkstresser

goes down

“We’ve got to get his mind right because he’s a sprained ankle away from having to come in and help his team win,” Pinkel said.

*Berkstresser has struggled the past few weeks in relief of Franklin, but Pinkel said it’s up to his teammates and the coaching staff to do a better job of helping him out.

“He’s a talented player…I place a huge emphasis on people around him playing well,” Pinkel said. “We see the things he excels at and you (have to) adjust your playcalling, your offense. We’ve made some adjustments that I think allow us to use his abilities.”
