Future basketball and football schedules took shape for Missouri on Thursday.
The Tigers and Illinois announced an extension of the Braggin’ Rights basketball game through 2017 at Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
Also, the Southeastern Conference announced its 2013 schedule for league games. In addition to meeting its SEC East Division opponents, the Tigers learned they’ll play at Mississippi and face Texas A at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.
The Braggin Rights nonconference game is one of the great spectacles in college basketball’s regular season. The building always fills up, half Mizzou, half Illini.
“There is nothing like this game in all of college basketball,” Tigers coach Frank Haith said.
In football next season, Missouri will play Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina and Texas A at home.
The games against the Gators, Vols and Gamecocks are on successive weekends starting Oct. 19.
On the road, the Tigers play Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Georgia and Mississippi. The only new opponent for MU is Mississippi, which replaces Alabama.
It had been determined at last summer’s SEC meetings that Arkansas would be Missouri’s permanent cross-division opponent. But that rivalry won’t begin in 2013, a season that the SEC calls a “bridge schedule.” SEC athletic directors will discuss future schedule formats in the spring.
“As we began working on the 2013 football schedule, it became apparent that the conference would need another year of the ‘bridge’ schedule to make everything work,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement. “I appreciate the SEC transition team and our athletics directors, who came together to put this schedule in place. We look forward to starting with our new scheduling rotation in 2014.”
