It’s over, right?

The Royals playoff dreams are just that: dreams. They’re six games back in the wild-card chase and that’s too much to overcome on Aug. 20. Isn’t it?

Well ... not really.

Last year on Aug. 20, the Oakland A’s were six back of the Texas Rangers in the AL West. The A’s ended up beating out the Rangers for the division title by one game.

On Aug. 20, 2011, the Red Sox had a 7 1/2 game lead over the Rays in the AL wild-card chase. Tampa Bay beat out Boston by one game by season’s end.

That same year, the Cardinals trailed the Braves by eight games in the wild-card chase on Aug. 20, and at that point they were behind the Giants as well. St. Louis leap-frogged both and made the playoffs.

On Aug. 20, 2010, the Padres had a five-game lead on the Giants in the AL West. San Francisco ended up winning the division by two games over San Diego.

On Aug. 20, 2009, the Tigers were leading the AL Central by 2 1/2 games over the White Sox, while the Twins were 6 1/2 back. By season’s end, Minnesota jumped the White Sox and finished tied with the Tigers for the division lead. The Twins won a one-game playoff.

Are the Royals guaranteed to make the playoffs? Of course not, but maybe the question should be whether your outlook is that the glass is half-full or half-empty.

Or it’s

“So you’re telling me there’s a chance”
