Royals pitcher Danny Duffy, who is recovering from last year's Tommy John surgery, answered fans' questions during a web chat from camp in Surprise, Ariz., on Monday.

Q: What was the reason behind your number change to No. 41 this year?

A: Nothing too crazy. I just wanted a fresh new start.

Q: Will you change your style at all due to the surgery?

A: Not at all. I think it was just a little overuse that led to my tear. The main reason it happened was because I couldn't slow myself down.

Q: What did you do in your downtime as you recovered from surgery?

A: I actually just kind of hung out. In the offseason I split time between my home in Santa Barbara and Kansas City. I worked with a really good specialist in California every other day.

Q: Did you take any positives from your time away from the game?

A: I saw a lot of new things that I hadn't seen before in the game when I was hurt. Bruce Chen and Luke Hochevar -- we'd talk just about every game. They'd show me stuff that was happening that I hadn't seen before. I tried to pick up as much as I could while I was down.

Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?

A: Just how good the team's gonna be, I think, and being a part of it. I think my injury happened at a good time. I'll come back for potentially the best season that we've had to look forward to for a long time.

Q: What is the timetable for your return?

A: Realistically, whenever the team thinks I'm ready. I try to shoot high and see if I could be back by early June.
