Royals need Jayson Nix, Johnny Giavotella to contribute with Christian Colon out

The Royals claimed Jayson Nix last week, and the maneuver invited questions. Why would a first-place club use a 40-man roster spot on a .133 hitter? The answer was insurance, and the Royals found themselves forced to cash in on the policy Tuesday night.
Christian Colon, the former first-round pick turned useful utility infielder, fractured the distal tip of his right hand’s middle finger. He may miss the rest of the season.
In Colon’s absence, the team feels covered because it has both Nix and recent call-up Johnny Giavotella. Nix is a decent fielder. Giavotella continues to hit at the minor-league level.
“That’s why we talked about that depth,” Yost said. “That depth is important. And we brought Johnny up, too, for it. Johnny’s a good right-handed bat. He provides that depth, too.”
The Royals have not yet declared Colon done for the season. But Yost was not optimistic about a quick return. He indicated the team would check on his condition again in a week.
“Something like this, normally, is two to three, four weeks,” Yost said. “I don’t know. But we’re going to re-evaluate in a week and see where we’re at.”

The Royals’ offense is still unsightly. But they scored enough to win on Tuesday.
