Royals agree to 1-year deal with John Bale

John Bale has agreed to a one-year contract with the Royals.

Bale, a 34-year-old left-handed pitcher, was 0-3 with a 4.39 ERA in 13 appearances, including three starts, in 2008. The Royals did not tender him a contract last week, making him a free agent, though speculation was always that Bale would return to the Royals.

Bale's numbers from last season are a bit skewed by three disastrous starts. In his 10 relief appearances in Septemeber, he pitched 11 1/3 scoreless innings, including a string of 21 consecutive batters retired.
