LAS VEGAS | The Royals are closing in on a one-year contract to reacquire free-agent pitcher Horacio Ramirez.
The deal could be announced as soon as today.
Ramirez, 29, was 1-1 with a 2.59 ERA last season for the Royals in 15 relief appearances before an Aug. 9 trade sent him to the Chicago White Sox for minor-league outfielder Paulo Orlando.
The Royals plan to give Ramirez, a left-hander, an opportunity to win a spot in the rotation. He spent five years as a starter with Atlanta and Seattle before shifting last season to the bullpen.
