Royals notebook: Gobble wants to prove himself

More News

Jimmy Gobble’s back is fine, so the last step left for him is to get some opportunities in the final month of the season.

Gobble spent August on a rehab assignment with Omaha. He pitched in eight games and gave up nine runs in 14 1/3 innings for a 5.65 ERA.

“I got to pitch quite a bit down there,” Gobble said. “That’s the main thing once it (back) gets healthy, get out there and pitch as much as possible.”

Before back problems flared up, Gobble was struggling with the Royals. Gobble’s ERA soared to 11.31 in 24 2/3 innings. He also allowed five home runs.

“I haven’t been real consistent with the strike zone this year,” Gobble said.

“That was the main thing I worked on. It was a big problem up here. I was walking guys and getting behind a lot. I really wanted to focus on getting ahead, just how I always approach the game. I wanted to get back to that.”

Gobble returns to a crowded bullpen. Just last week there were no lefties on the staff. Now there are three with Gobble, Ron Mahay and John Bale, all of whom were recently activated from the disabled list.

The trick for manager Trey Hillman is finding opportunities to use all the different options he has in the bullpen.

“It would be nice to get in every game,” Gobble said. “As a pitcher you want to pitch, no matter what, when, how. I hope Trey has an opportunity to use me a lot to prove to myself, the organization and everyone that I’m healthy and back.”

Better than Disney World

A day after getting called up to the major leagues for the first time, right-handed pitcher Devon Lowery was still relishing it.

“I have a smile from ear to ear,” Lowery said. “Yesterday was like your first trip to Disney World when you were a little kid, maybe a little bit better. Not maybe — it is better than Disney World.

“I walked out and saw the crowd, the stadium and the fountains going. It’s something you always dream of.”

The next step for Lowery is to make his major-league debut.

“I thought about it,” Lowery said. “It’s one of those things you can’t say in words how you will feel. You never know when your adrenaline takes over when that moment comes.”
