Royals notes: Guillen’s fan flap criticized

More News

Although José Guillen was in the lineup Wednesday, Guillen’s actions Tuesday night when he had words with a fan were not endorsed by Royals general manager Dayton Moore.

“It doesn’t matter what a fan says. It doesn’t matter,” Moore said. “You’ve got to respond in a way that’s professional. The best response is no response most of the time. Fans have a right to say and act in whatever way they see fit as long as they don’t infringe on the rights of their fellow fans.

“Players need to respond in a way that is respectful to the organization, themselves and the game. It’s an ongoing educational process with José with what we expect here in Kansas City.”

Royals manager Trey Hillman didn’t see the incident. He said he was in the bathroom.

“We talked about it briefly. There’s no sense commenting on it,” Hillman said.

Royals officials said that after Tuesday night’s incident, the fan involved was moved to another section of the stadium and given tickets to another game.

A matter of timing

The Royals find themselves caught in a crossfire between the Pittsburgh Pirates and first-round pick Pedro Alvarez.

Alvarez, the second overall pick in the draft, refused to sign his contract with the Pirates, and the players’ association filed a grievance Wednesday claiming the Aug. 15 deadline was unilaterally extended by Major League Baseball without the union’s permission.

Alvarez’s agent, Scott Boras, has informed the Pirates that his client won’t report to the club unless the contract is renegotiated.

Here’s where the Royals come in: The Pirates claim that Alvarez’s contract was submitted before the deadline — and before the deal that Boras reached with the Royals on behalf of Eric Hosmer, the third overall pick.

The Pirates issued a statement saying: “Mr. Boras has been informed that if he pursues a claim that our contract with Pedro was not timely, he puts Eric Hosmer’s contract with Kansas City in jeopardy.”

Moore was surprised to see Hosmer’s contract brought up.

“What I need to say is we agreed during the appropriate time frame and the terms were submitted in the appropriate time limit,” Moore said.
