CLEVELAND | Reliever Josh Newman rejoined the Royals in time for Wednesday’s game against the Cleveland Indians after the club placed right-hander Luke Hochevar on the disabled list because of a deep bruise above his right rib cage.
Hochevar suffered the injury in Tuesday’s 9-4 loss to the Indians at Progressive Field.
Newman was optioned Tuesday to the Class AAA Omaha to clear roster space for just-signed Kip Wells. The decision to place Hochevar on the disabled list allowed the Royals to recall Newman before the 10-day minimum stay.
Newman allowed three runs in six innings over three appearances for the Royals after joining the club Aug. 10 from Omaha.
