The verdict is in from the Commissioner’s Office on suspensions related to Sunday’s brawl between the Royals and Chicago White Sox at Kauffman Stadium.
Royals pitcher Zack Greinke and catcher Miguel Olivo each received five-game suspensions and fines of unspecified amounts. Royals manager Trey Hillman received a one-game suspension and an unspecified fine. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen received a two-game suspension and an unspecified fine. White Sox pitcher D.J. Carrasco was neither fined nor suspended. Greinke and Olivo each announced their intention to appeal the ruling, which allows them to remain on the active roster until their appeal is held. Appeal hearings are likely to take place later this month when the Royals play in New York.
Hillman and Guillen began serving their suspensions immediately.
The brawl occurred Sunday in the fifth inning of the Royals’ 14-3 victory. Olivo charged the mound after being hit by a third straight inside pitch from Carrasco.
The umpiring crew, headed by crew chief Gary Cederstrom, ejected Olivo and Carrasco. Guillen was ejected for arguing the decision to eject Carrasco.
Both benches were warned at the time to cease further confrontation. That prompted an immediate ejection for Greinke and Hillman when Greinke hit Nick Swisher in the seventh inning.
