Royals' Aviles picked as AL's co-player of the week

Royals rookie infielder Mike Aviles is starting to garner some national attention.

Aviles was chosen Monday as the American League’s co-player of the week after raising his average to .340 by getting 15 hits in 26 at-bats in six games. He shared the award with Yankees outfielder Xavier Nady.

St. Louis outfielder Ryan Ludwick was the National League winner after going 14 for 26 with four homers and eight RBIs in seven games.

Four other Royals were among the nine players who received consideration for the AL award: DH Billy Butler, outfielder José Guillen and pitchers Zack Greinke and Joakim Soria.

The Royals were 5-1 last week. They swept three games in Oakland before winning two of three weekend games against the White Sox at Kauffman Stadium.

Aviles, 27, went eight for 14 against the A’s before going seven for 12 against the White Sox. He also finished the week with two homers, five RBIs and a 1.000 slugging percentage.

Nady was 10 for 19 with three homers and 10 RBIs in six games for the Yankees. Player-of-the-week recipients receive luxury Swiss Tourneau timepieces.
