Brief homestand

The Royals return home tonight for a three-game series against the Rangers before heading back to the road Friday for six interleague games at Arizona and St. Louis.

The pitching matchups for the Texas series:

•Tonight: Meche, 3-8 and 5.54, vs. Texas RHP Kevin Millwood, 4-3 and 4.65, at 7:10 p.m.

•Wednesday: RHP Kyle Davies, 2-0 and 1.54, vs. Texas RHP Vicente Padilla, 7-3 and 3.73, at 7:10 p.m.

•Thursday: RHP Brian Bannister, 5-6 and 4.98, vs. TBA at 1:10 p.m.

Tryout camp canceled

The Royals, apparently, have all of the talent they need.

The club abruptly canceled plans for an open tryout camp this morning at MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe. No reason was given.

Still no love

The Royals again failed to place anyone among the position leaders in the latest balloting update for the All-Star Game.

Major League Baseball released the top 15 vote recipients among outfielders and the top five recipients at all other positions. There is no balloting for pitchers.

The All-Star Game is July 15 at Yankee Stadium. The teams will be announced July 6.

Etc.

•Joey Gathright played center field after awakening to less pain than expected in his left shoulder. He injured the shoulder Sunday while making a diving catch on Hideki Matsui’s sinking liner in the fifth inning.

•Infielder Mike Aviles made his fourth straight start and went two for three with a double. He was five for 15 in the series.

•David DeJesus’ hitting streak ended at 12 games when he went zero for four.

•Miguel Olivo went two for four with a two-run homer. He now has 22 extra-base hits and 21 singles.

•The Royals hold a 4-3 edge in the season series that concludes with three games from Aug. 15-17 at Yankee Stadium.
