Selig isn’t ready to commit on year for All-Star Game at Kauffman Stadium

MARYVALE, Ariz. | Commissioner Bud Selig continues to tease Kansas City on his promise to award an All-Star Game to a renovated Kauffman Stadium.
Selig attended Saturday’s game between the Royals and Milwaukee Brewers at Maryvale Baseball Park. He met briefly with reporters in the press box in the third inning.
So what about that promise?
“The only All-Star Games that have been awarded,” Selig said, “are this year in New York, which will be very historic, and next year in St. Louis.
“I’m still reviewing everything else, but I would say Kansas City is very well-positioned to get an All-Star Game.”
Selig issued his pledge of an All-Star Game for a renovated Kauffman Stadium just prior to the 2006 vote on public funding for the $250 million project.
The renovation is scheduled for completion by midseason 2009. The Royals are believed to be seeking the All-Star Game in 2011.
No decision on Guillen
Selig seemed to offer hope Saturday afternoon that outfielder Jose Guillen’s 15-day suspension could be reviewed, and possibly rescinded, before an arbitrator rules on an appeal.
“I haven’t made any decisions on that yet,” Selig said. “We are working to finish off all of Sen. (George) Mitchell’s recommendations, which will really tighten the program up.”
Guillen received a suspension Dec. 6 for violating baseball’s drug policy after the San Francisco Chronicle reported he purchased $19,000 in steroids and human growth hormone from 2003-05.
Guillen appealed the suspension and has always denied using performance-enhancing drugs. Guillen was then cited Dec. 13 in the Mitchell Report, a study funded by Major League Baseball to examine the use of steroids within the sport.
Mitchell recommended in the study’s conclusions that no penalties be imposed on those players cited in the report.
