Royals camp update: Kyle Davies makes early bid for rotation

SURPRISE, Ariz. | Right-hander Kyle Davies made a good first impression Sunday by working three strong innings in the Royals’ 8-7 loss to Texas.

Davies gave up one run and three hits in three innings.

“I was impressed with Kyle getting back in his delivery several times after he got out of it,” manager Trey Hillman said. “He had a real good breaking ball at times but left a couple up. His fastball command had some real good spots of consistency.”

Davies is one of at least eight candidates for the last two spots in the rotation. He was 3-7 with a 6.66 ERA in 11 starts last year after arriving from Atlanta in a July 31 trade for reliever Octavio Dotel.

Injury updates

Shortstop Angel Sanchez was scheduled to test his sore groin Monday by taking batting practice and limited infield drills.

Outfielders Justin Huber and Chris Lubanski returned to camp after missing Sunday because of the flu. First baseman Ryan Shealy said he expected to go through full pre-game drills after cutting short his workout Sunday in his first day back after a three-day absence due to the flu.

Gordon expected back

Third baseman Alex Gordon told club officials that he’ll return to camp in time to make Tuesday’s trip to Tucson, Ariz., for a game against the Colorado Rockies. Gordon left camp Sunday afternoon to attend his paternal grandfather’s funeral Monday in Lincoln, Neb.

Pitching plans

Plans call for right-hander Brett Tomko to make his spring debut Tuesday by pitching three or four innings against the Rockies. Tomko worked two-plus inning last Thursday in an intrasquad game.

Also scheduled to pitch: Brian Lawrence, Julio Pimentel, Tyler Lumsden, Carlos Rosa and Ryan Braun. Lumsden and Braun will also be making their spring debuts.

Minor-league camp

Full-squad workouts opened Monday for 157 minor-league players, although 70 players were in attendance last week for the organization’s early camp.

The big-league club traditionally begins trimming its camp roster once the minor leaguers swing into full drills, but Hillman indicated no immediate cuts are expected.

“I need more time to evaluate a few guys,” he said, “and others who are here deserve more time to get a feel for the (big-league) experience.”

The Royals currently have 60 players in big-league camp.
