A look at Cy Young winners in or before their age-25 seasons
More News
Zack Greinke is the ninth pitcher to win his first Cy Young Award in or before his age-25 season since 1985 — when Bret Saberhagen and Dwight Gooden exploded on the national scene. Each of the previous eight enjoyed at least good careers, and at least half of them could end up in the Hall of Fame. Here’s a closer look:
Tim Lincecum (24), 2008
Actually had a lower ERA this year (2.48) than last (2.62). Assuming his body holds up, he should be one of the dominant pitchers of the next decade.
Johan Santana (25), 2004
Finished in top five Cy Young voting each of the next four years, including the 2006 award. Turns 31 in March, and already has a very strong Hall of Fame case.
Roger Clemens (23), 1986
Also won the MVP, and another Cy Young Award the next year. Won seven Cy Youngs in a legendary career, and, well, let’s just move on.
Barry Zito (24), 2002
Zito remains mostly effective, but hasn’t had a dominant season since. He did, however, parlay his steadiness into more than 100 million regrettable dollars from the Giants.
Pedro Martinez (25), 1997
There’s a good case to be made that Pedro is the best comparison to Greinke. He won the first of three Cy Youngs in Montreal, and has since put together one of the best careers of his generation.
Tom Glavine (25), 1991
Finished second the next year, and third the year after that. Won 305 games and two Cy Youngs in a no-doubt Hall of Fame career.
Bret Saberhagen (21), 1985
Sabes won another Cy Young for the Royals in 1989, when he was 25. One of the best pitchers in franchise history.
Dwight Gooden (20), 1985
Had one of the best pitching seasons ever, going 24-4 with a 1.53 ERA. Drug issues make him one of the all-time what-ifs.
