Royals officials dismiss — in strong terms — reports of possible interest in acquiring outfielder Milton Bradley from the Cubs. “Idiots” was one of the nicer comments directed at those offering such speculation.
The Cubs are looking to trade Bradley after a trouble-filled year in which he was sent home for the season. Bradley has $21 million left on a contract that runs through 2011.
The Royals are likely linked to Bradley because they nearly acquired him from Oakland in 2006 for reliever Leo Nuñez. The deal was voided at the last moment when Bradley suffered an injury.
Sickbay report
The flu, a virus — something — is ravaging the Royals’ clubhouse as the season draws to a close. Outfielders David DeJesus and Mark Teahen, along with catcher Miguel Olivo, were unavailable Saturday for a second straight game.
Promoting Greinke
Zack Greinke’s pursuit of the Cy Young Award continues today when he starts against Minnesota at 1:10 p.m. in the Royals’ home finale.
The Royals are promoting Greinke’s achievements by offering a Zack Pack ticket promotion for today’s game.
All seats normally priced $33 or less — except the Dri-Duck Fountain Seats — are being offered at half price.
The Royals are also distributing free “Greinke for Cy” T-shirts today to the first 10,000 fans 21 or older. All Greinke items in the team store — excluding jerseys — will be discounted 23 percent.
Gardenhire ejected
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was ejected by home-plate umpire Eric Cooper in the eighth inning.
Gardenhire’s argument stemmed from Cooper’s decision to warn both benches after Ron Mahay threw an inside pitch to Billy Butler, who wound up with an RBI double. That pitch came after Michael Cuddyer was hit earlier in the inning by Kyle Farnsworth.
