Royals notebook: Club won’t play next season in St. Louis
More News
DETROIT | The 2010 schedule, released Tuesday, shows the Royals won’t play next season in St. Louis for the first time since 2005.
The only I-70 Series matchup against the Cardinals will be June 25-27 at Kauffman Stadium. St. Louis won five of the six games this season between the two teams, including a three-game sweep in Kansas City.
The Royals open the 2010 season April 5 against Detroit at Kauffman Stadium. The six-game homestand continues April 7-8 against the Tigers before Boston makes its only appearance for three games during April 9-11.
The interleague schedule shows Colorado (May 21-23), Houston (June 15-17) and the Cardinals making stops at Kauffman Stadium. The Royals’ interleague road games are June 11-13 at Cincinnati, June 18-20 at Atlanta and June 21-23 at Washington.
The series in Atlanta marks the Royals’ first games against the Braves in Dayton Moore’s tenure as general manager. Moore worked for the Braves from 1994 until becoming the Royals’ GM on June 8, 2006.
The Yankees make the only trip to Kauffman Stadium for a four-game series during Aug. 12-15.
The Royals make their first of three visits to Minnesota’s new Target Field in a three-game series during April 16-18.
Game times and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
Teahen returns
Mark Teahen rejoined the club after a quick trip to Kansas City for an examination on the muscle spasms that surfaced Saturday in his lower back in pregame fielding drills at third base.
“I just went back to Kansas City to make sure nothing was seriously wrong with it,” he said. “There wasn’t. It was just a matter of loosening back up and getting back on the field. It’s day to day. As soon as it feels good, I’m back in there.”
The Royals are still taking it slow. Teahen didn’t play Tuesday after doing most of his pregame work inside the clubhouse.
“He’s available if we need him,” manager Trey Hillman said. “He’s much, much better but still day to day. We’ll see how he continues to respond.”
Cruz improving
Reliever Juan Cruz is a step closer to returning to active duty after experiencing no day-after problems with his strained right shoulder after throwing off-speed pitches Sunday for the first time in his recovery.
“He’s moving forward,” Hillman said. “We’re still hoping to get him back into some action before the end of the season.
Cruz hasn’t pitched since Aug. 5. He was 3-4 with a 6.17 ERA in 43 games prior to the injury.
Honoring Harwell
The Tigers plan to honor broadcasting legend Ernie Harwell prior to tonight’s game. Harwell, 91, spent 42 of his 55 years in baseball with the Tigers. He announced recently that he has inoperable cancer.
Tentative plans call for an on-field ceremony in the third inning. That required the Royals’ agreement because the delay will occur during the game.
