SEATTLE | Sit yourself down for this little late-night bulletin from the Pacific Northwest: The Royals hit four home runs Thursday in an 8-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

OK, sip the coffee and read that again.

The Royals hit four home runs Thursday night in an 8-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

Yes, of course it was a season high. In fact, the Royals haven’t hit four homers in a game in more than 27 months. The muscle came from Brayan Peña, Yuniesky Betancourt, Alberto Callaspo and David DeJesus.

“We got a few squared up,” DeJesus said. “(Mark) Teahen should have had one, too. He squared up one better than anyone. He just hit it to the wrong part of the park.”

That came in the ninth inning on a drive that Seattle center fielder Franklin Gutierrez ran down at the outfield wall. No matter. Four were more than enough.

“The guys have been swinging the bats better,” Peña said. “The guys are still battling, and it was a great way to start the (seven-game) road trip.”

The Royals built a 3-0 lead against Seattle rookie Doug Fister on a two-run homer by Peña in the second inning and a solo drive by Betancourt in the fifth.

After the Mariners closed to 3-2 in their fifth, Fister yielded a two-run shot to Callaspo in the sixth inning. The three homers stuck Fister, 1-1, with a loss and a line that showed just five hits in six innings but also five runs.

“He was pretty good,” DeJesus said. “Really, he had good stuff. He just made a few too many mistakes.”

DeJesus extended the lead to 7-2 with a two-run homer in the seventh inning against reliever Shawn Kelley. The Royals’ only run not scored via a homer came on Josh Anderson’s two-out squib single in the ninth inning.

Royals starter Kyle Davies, 5-9, got the victory after limiting Seattle to two runs and five hits in six innings. Jamey Wright worked two scoreless innings before Bruce Chen served up a two-run homer to Jack Wilson in the ninth.

Chen then struck out the final three hitters.

The four-homer attack boosted the Royals to 49-78 and aided their efforts to avoid a fifth 100-loss season in eight years. Going 14-21 or better in their final 35 games will do it.

It was a strange ride for Davies: He wobbled through the first inning before working three strong frames. He then yielded two runs in the fifth and nearly didn’t make it through the sixth.

The Mariners put runners at second and third with one out in the sixth, but Davies wiggled free.

“I threw way too many pitches in the fifth,” Davies said, “then I go out in the sixth and walk the first guy — and I’m thinking, `Oh, man. Here we go again.’ But I made some really good pitches.”

DeJesus’ homer in the seventh seemed the finish Seattle and marked the Royals’ first four-homer game since May 23, 2007. That was an 11-7 victory over Cleveland at Kauffman Stadium and was so long ago that Cliff Lee had yet to become dominant.

Lee allowed three of those homers — to Mike Sweeney, Alex Gordon and John Buck. Mark Grudzielanek hit the fourth homer against Fernando Cabrera.

This latest binge came against the American League’s best staff: The Mariners entered the night with the league’s best ERA. Fister had a 2.21 ERA and quality starts in all three previous outings since entering the rotation.

Davies dodged a couple of bullets in the first inning. Gutierrez led off with a sharp drive into the left-center gap but was thrown out in trying to stretch a single into a double.
