Alex Gordon has been optioned to Class AAA Omaha, replaced on the big league roster by reliever Kyle Farnsworth.

Gordon, 25, was hitting .227 with two homers and eight RBIs in 22 games since returning from hip surgery last month. He’s batting .198 with three homers and 11 RBIs overall.

The Royals have been taking it slow with Gordon, but appeared to be moving toward giving him more time in recent days. He played five consecutive days from Aug. 13-17.

Farnsworth has been on the disabled list since suffering a strained groin June 24 at Houston. He is 1-4 with a 4.24 ERA, 25 strikeouts and six walks in 23 1/3 innings.
