ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. | A new month and, finally, some good news for the Royals.

All-Star closer Joakim Soria, as expected, returned to the active roster prior to Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Coincidence or not, the Royals were 5-16 while Soria recovered from a strained right rotator cuff.

The Royals also activated shortstop Tony Peña from the disabled list after clearing space by putting pitcher Sidney Ponson on the disabled list because of a strained right elbow.

Peña started Tuesday’s game at shortstop. It was his first game action since suffering a broken hamate bone in his left hand May 2 at Minnesota. He underwent surgery May 5 to remove the bone.

The Royals were already down a player after Monday’s move to place outfielder Coco Crisp on the bereavement list following the death of his great grandmother. Players must miss at least three days when placed on the list.

Soria tested his shoulder’s recovery last week in two rehab outings in extended spring training games in Surprise, Ariz. He was 1-0 with seven saves and a 2.08 ERA in eight appearances prior to his injury.

Peña was hitless in 11 at-bats in 10 games prior to his injury. Ponson was 1-5 with a 7.27 ERA in 11 games, including six starts. He last pitched Friday when he gave up four runs and four hits in one-third of an inning against the White Sox.
