Royals notebook: Meche is not injured

More News

Despite experiencing some lower-back tightness during a rough 8-1 loss to Toronto on Tuesday, Royals pitcher Gil Meche is expected to make his next scheduled start.

General manager Dayton Moore said Meche, who allowed five runs, seven hits and five walks before leaving the game in the fourth inning, underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam, and the test showed no damage.

Meche battled a similar ailment through the early weeks of spring training, but barring any unforeseen setback, Moore expects Meche to take the ball Sunday against Minnesota.

That’s certainly good news for the Royals. And even better news for Meche, who struggled with his control Tuesday. His five walks against the Blue Jays were more than he’d allowed in his previous four starts combined (four in 27 1/3 innings). Not that the Blue Jays knew there was anything wrong.

“I couldn’t tell,” said Blue Jays second baseman Aaron Hill, who went one for two off Meche with a walk. “He’s got good stuff, he just happened to (leave) a couple balls up.”

Soria update

All-Star closer Joakim Soria, who threw off a mound on Tuesday for the first time since he was diagnosed with a sore right shoulder late last week, reported no problems with the shoulder on Wednesday.

“I feel fine,” said Soria, who is expected to throw again today. If all goes well, Moore said Soria could be available for the weekend series at Minnesota, which starts Friday. Soria, who has only pitched once since April 13, has a 1.80 ERA and is five for five in save opportunities this season.

Butler’s big night

First baseman Billy Butler had the second multi-home run game of his career on Wednesday. His first came last Aug. 30th, when he had two homers and four RBIs in the Royals’ 13-3 win over Detroit.
