Greinke pitches another gem for Royals

Is this the night, after more than a generation, that baseball truly became relevant again in Kansas City? Maybe. Just maybe.

Zack Greinke delivered another masterpiece Friday night in a 6-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers in front of a sellout crowd on a gorgeous spring night at a glitteringly refurbished Kauffman Stadium.

If you want to believe, it was all here.

“Today was one of those days,” left fielder David DeJesus said, “when you go, ‘Oh, wow. This is the Royals changing. This is a different Royals team than in the past. We really are on the upswing.’ ”

Greinke, 4-0, is a big reason why. He produced his second straight complete game in limiting the Tigers to three hits. And it took an unearned run to halt a streak of 38 consecutive scoreless innings.

“He’s got such good stuff,” Tigers catcher Gerald Laird said. “You could tell the last couple of innings he kind of just turned it on. He sniffed that complete game, and that’s what the good ones do.”

For this night, at least, the Royals didn’t need All-Star closer Joakim Soria, who is expected to miss several games because of a sore right shoulder.

Greinke struck out 10, walked one and, well, the Royals ought to be glad they signed him to that four-year extension for $38 million in January. Who knows how much he could command at this point?

“It’s fun to watch,” third baseman Mark Teahen said. “Tonight, more than anything — maybe it was just the energy or whatever — but he looked unhittable.”

The crowd roared its approval when Greinke, on his 108th pitch, ended the game by retiring Magglio Ordoñez on a grounder to first. Greinke retired the last 15 batters.

The Royals haven’t had a pitcher throw successive complete games since Jamey Wright on Sept. 6 and Sept. 13 in 2003.

“I got up to throw in the ninth,” Wright said. “I threw one ball, and then I just sat there. I didn’t want to miss anything. I wanted to keep watching this. That was pretty special to watch.”

Greinke had won two of his three previous starts by 2-0 scores, but the Royals got three runs for him in the first two innings against Detroit rookie Rick Porcello.

Teahen hit a two-run homer in the first inning, a slicing drive into the left-field bullpen, and Alberto Callaspo opened the second inning with his first major-league homer on a 391-foot drive to right.

“That’s always huge,” Greinke said. “You can attack without worrying about the solo home run. Miguel Cabrera is possibly the best — and at least in the top three hitters in baseball — and I don’t have to completely pitch around him.

“Just make some good pitches, and it helped me get ahead on him. Magglio, the same thing. I wasn’t behind in a lot of counts because of that.”

Porcello, 1-2, flashed dominant form at times in limiting the Royals to just four hits in six innings, but this night belonged to Greinke.

It all took just 2 hours, 6 minutes in front of 36,363 fans. The Royals improved to 9-7 and re-took sole possession of first place in the Central Division by one game over Detroit and Chicago.

“I don’t know why there were so many people here today,” Greinke said. “I know it was fireworks night, and I guess there was a (Buck Night) giveaway.

“But still, the Royals have come a long way selling out a game against the Tigers. The last couple of years, that wouldn’t have happened, no matter what they were giving away.”
