Royals' Olivo returns after Dominican Republic's exit from WBC

More News

SURPRISE, Ariz. | Catcher Miguel Olivo is back in camp and still trying to figure out how the Dominican Republic suffered two losses -- two! -- to the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic.

"Unbelievable," he said. "I'm still pinching myself and asking, 'Did this really happen?' "

The Dominicans entered the 16-nation tournament as one of the favorites. They were shocked 3-2 by the Dutch in their pool opener before Olivo paced a 9-0 rout of Panama with two homers and five RBIs.

The Netherlands then ousted the Dominicans 2-1 in 11 innings in an elimination game. Neither team scored for 10 innings. The Dominicans scored once in the 11th, but the Dutch answered with two runs, thanks to two errors, in their half of the inning.

"I don't know what to say," Olivo said. "We had so many good players, but we didn't hit. I'm just glad I didn't have to go home (to the Dominican)."

Left-handed pitcher Lenny DiNardo also returned Thursday to camp following Italy’s elimination. Position batles

Billy Butler had a web gem at first base in Thursday's 9-3 win over the White Sox. Besides his RBI double in the four-run fourth inning, Butler ranged far to his right to nab Chris Getz’s sharp hopper for the final out in the top of the inning.

Stat Wrap

Coco Crisp had a single and two walks in his three plate appearances. That boosted his average to .391 and his on-base percentage to .545 through 11 games.

Medical updates

Three pitchers remain unavailable because of various ailments:

• Lefty John Bale has already gained 4 pounds after undergoing surgery March 3 to remove a hyperactive thyroid. He also has progressed to throwing from 60 feet.

• Right-hander Oscar Villarreal, 27, continues to work through a sore elbow but doesn't appear close to returning to game action. He signed Dec. 18 as a minor-league free agent after going 1-3 with a 5.02 ERA last season in 35 games for Houston.

• Right-hander Victor Marte, 28, is still working to strengthen a shoulder that showed laxity in the pre-camp physical. He spent the last three seasons in Japan but returned to the Royals after being removed in January from Major League Baseball's Disqualified List.

Baby watch

Outfielder José Guillen remains in Miami awaiting the birth of a son. His wife, Yamel, is expected to deliver the couple's first child before the weekend.

"(Guillen) said she's feeling OK," manager Trey Hillman said. "He got his workout in. He hit (Wednesday). He said his body is feeling good. I told him to take care of Yamel and to let us know how things are going."

Guillen has two sons by a previous marriage.

Remembrances

Penne Moore, the mother of general manager Dayton Moore, will be buried Friday in Coldwater, Kan. Hillman planned to leave after Thursday's game to attend the services.

The family requests donations to Unlimited Potential Inc., an organization that seeks to promote ministry through evangelistic baseball clinics. Donations can be sent to the organization at P.O. Box 1355, Warsaw, Ind., 46581.

Penne Moore passed away Tuesday after an extended illness in Houston.

Nationals sign Wells

Ex-Royals pitcher Kip Wells has surfaced with the Washington Nationals. Wells, 32, signed a minor-league deal that allows him to make $500,000 if he makes the big-league club.

Wells was 0-1 with an 8.71 ERA last season in 10 relief appearances for the Royals after signing Aug. 19 as a free agent. He was 1-2 with a 5.27 ERA earlier last season in 15 games for Colorado.

Notable

• Lubanski is seven for 14 with six RBIs.

• Left-handed pitcher Lenny DiNardo returned to camp following Italy’s elimination in the WBC.

• Birthday wishes today to shortstop Mike Aviles (28) and pitcher Matt Wright (27).

Classic clips

Tracking the Royals in Wednesday's games in the World Baseball Classic:

• Shortstop Mike Aviles had a single in four at-bats when Puerto Rico clinched the top seed from Pool D in a 5-0 victory over the Netherlands.

• Reliever Joakim Soria didn’t pitch when Mexico clinched a spot in the second round with a 16-1 mercy-rule victory over Australia in Pool B. Mexico plays Cuba today to determine the pool’s top seed in the second round.
