The Missouri firearms deer season will end this weekend with a big icicle.
Temperatures are expected to be below freezing over much of the state when the last segment of the youth season begins Saturday morning. It will continue Sunday.
Hunting is open to kids ages 6 to 15. If youngsters are hunter-education certified, they can hunt on their own. Others have to hunt in the direct presence of an adult who has the required hunting permits and is hunter-ed certified if required.
Adults cannot shoot, only provide mentoring.
Hunters hope the cold weather will have deer on the move. But officials with the Department of Conservation say the frigid temperatures may reduce the amount of time hunters are willing to spend in their stands.
In January 2014, hunters took 1,183 deer during the last segment of the youth season. They shot 2,197 deer in the segment during the segment in January 2013.
Alternative-methods deer season results
Missouri hunters took 11,025 deer during the alternative-methods season that ran Dec.20-30. That was less than the 2013 season, when 11,967 deer were taken, and the 2012 hunt, when 14,921 whitetails were shot.
The hunt once was called the muzzleloader season, but has been expanded to include center-fire pistols, air-powered guns, bows, crossbows and atlatls.
Top counties this year were Oregon, with 269 deer checked in, Franklin with 248 and Howell with 244.
Welcome the new year with … squirrel for dinner?
Oh, come on. Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it.
To some hunters, squirrel and gravy is a delicacy.
The Missouri Department of Conservation will help beginners put some of that meat on the table when the staff at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs holds a workshop and mentored hunt in January.
An orientation will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 10 at Burr Oak Woods. Firearms safety, squirrel-hunting basics, scouting and shooting skills will be included.
From 9 a.m. to noon Jan 24, participants will be able to go on a mentored hunt at the Cooley Lake Conservation Area in Clay County. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. that day, there will be a session on cleaning and cooking the squirrels at Burr Oak Woods.
Registration is required. The workshop is free and open to participants ages 11 and older. Youths ages 11 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
