Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter died Sunday at the age of 76.
Carter, who spent 19 years in jail after being wrongly convicted of murder, had been stricken by prostate cancer and died in his Toronto home early Sunday morning.
The New Jersey native was arrested for a triple homicide in 1966 before being wrongfully convicted for the crime twice in 1967 and 1976. The second conviction was overturned in 1985 after Carter served nearly two decades in prison.
Following his release, Carter moved to Toronto and eventually became the executive director of the Association in Defense of the Wrongly Convicted.
Although never a world champion, Carter went 27-12-1 with 19 knockouts during his career in the ring.
