Brenna Dowell of Odessa on Sunday night finished 11th overall in the United States women’s gymnastics championships in St. Louis and was invited to the U.S. Olympic trials on July 8-10 in San Jose after being chosen again to the national team.
Dowell deferred her sophomore year at Oklahoma to focus on making the six-member Olympic team, which includes an alternate, that will compete at the Rio Olympics in August.
She finished ninth at the 2012 trials and was part of the U.S. team’s gold medal performance in the 2015 world championships.
Led by emerging superstar Simone Biles, the team is considered deep and earning a berth remains a longshot for Dowell.
