Chiefs training camp report, Aug. 1: Hamstring injuries abound

The highlights from Friday’s day in Chiefs camp in St. Joseph, along with an injury report and Saturday’s schedule.

THE OFFENSE

In one-on-ones, Tight end Anthony Fasano made a nice catch over Frank Zombo in coverage. … Receiver Kyle Williams smoked Malcolm Bronson for a long touchdown … Receiver Weston Dressler made a couple nice grabs … In team drills, quarterback Alex Smith unleashed a gorgeous throw deep over the middle on a post to De’Anthony Thomas. It beat cornerback Phillip Gaines but the ball came out going to the ground … Running back Cyrus Gray put a nice move on cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke … Quarterback Chase Daniel scrambled out of the pocket to his right and hit receiver Albert Wilson, who made a nice contested catch over safety Husain Abdullah … Running back Knile Davis made the play of the day when he caught a little swing pass in the left flat and put the moves on a bunch of defenders as he cut across to the field up the right sideline and almost scored … Receiver Weston Dressler dropped a pass on a wheel route … Tight end Anthony Fasano caught a bootleg pass from Smith down the right side and showed some speed and nimbleness to get upfield.

THE DEFENSE

Cornerback Phillip Gaines recorded an interception in individual drills on a pass intended for Dressler … Bronson and Abdullah got the first-team work at safety with Eric Berry sitting out … Van Dyke knocked away a short pass intended for Dwayne Bowe … Gaines intercepted a pass off a deflection in seven-on-seven.

INJURY REPORT

Running back Charcandrick West, defensive tackle Jermelle Cudjo and receivers A.J. Jenkins, Junior Hemingway, Mark Harrison and Kyle Williams are all dealing with hamstring injuries. Hemingway, Jenkins, Harrison and Cudjo did not practice at all.

Berry (heel) and defensive end Mike Catapano (illness) also missed practice.

Cornerback Marcus Cooper (hamstring) and cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke returned to practice.

Safety Sanders Commings had surgery to repair a broken ankle on Thursday but the club also revealed that he had surgery to repair a broken fibula.

TODAY’S SCHEDULE

Practice will resume at 8:15 a.m. Saturday.
