It looks like outside linebacker Justin Houston might return to action this weekend.
Houston, who has missed the Chiefs' last four games with a hyperextended left knee, went through warmups during the portion of Friday's practice that was open to the media. Houston wore a brace on his knee and hasn’t practiced in a month.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Houston will be listed as questionable for their regular-season finale at 3:25 p.m. Sunday against the Oakland Raiders on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
The NFL defines that status as a “50/50 chance he will not play.”
“He got good work in, we’ll just see how he feels,” Reid said. “I’ve kind of said it’s day-by-day and that’s really what it is. He moved around pretty good today, we’ll just see how he does here.”
Two other starters who have been out this week — outside linebacker Tamba Hali (thumb/knee) and right tackle Jah Reid (knee) — did not practice. Reid said Hali’s absence was preventative — “we don’t want his knee to swell,” he said — and both players will be listed as questionable.
Safety Husain Abdullah (concussion) practiced for the second straight day and will also be listed as questionable. He’s missed the Chiefs’ last four games.
Houston, 26, remains the Chiefs’ sack leader with 7 1/2 despite missing the last month. He has also recorded 30 tackles and 13 quarterback hurries.
Second-year pro Dee Ford has started the last four games in Houston’s absence, recording 11 combined tackles, seven quarterback hurries, three sacks and a pass deflection.
No update on De’Anthony Thomas
Reid opened his media session Friday by reiterating that the recent decision to place De’Anthony (Thomas) on the non-football illness list was not concussion-related.
Reid was asked, however, if Thomas will be in the Chiefs’ plans for next season, but he deferred the question to general manager John Dorsey.
“Listen, I really don’t know on that,” Reid said. “The question was ‘Will we have him in 2016?’ I don’t know that, that would be a Dorse question. I just fed you the information that I know.”
