The Chiefs signed six undrafted free agents on Monday, including a safety from coach Andy Reid’s alma mater and two receivers with return ability.
Brigham Young safety Daniel Sorensen is probably the most highly-regarded player of the group. At 6 feet 2 and 208 pounds, he was ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper’s No. 11 overall safety prior to the draft.
Sorensen, who ran a 4.67 40-yard dash and posted a 32-inch vertical jump, was particularly impressive in the agility drills at the combine, where he posted times in the three-cone drill (6.47 seconds), 20-yard shuttle (3.95) and 60-yard shuttle (10.80) that ranked among the best at his position. In 2013, Sorensen had 65 tackles, two interceptions and led the Cougars in pass breakups in 2013 with 12.
The group also includes two versatile receivers in Georgia State’s Albert Wilson and Louisiana-Lafayette’s Darryl Surgent.
The 5-foot-9, 200-pound Wilson, who was Kiper’s No. 36 receiver entering the draft, was incredibly productive in 2013. He caught 71 passes for 1,177 yards and eight touchdowns, returned 31 kicks for a 23.5 average and 15 punts for a 8.3 average. He also ran a 4.43 40-yard dash at the combine and posted a vertical jump of 37.5.
Surgent, who is listed at 5-9 and 200 pounds and was Kiper’s No. 75 receiver entering the draft, caught 31 passes for 400 yards and five touchdowns in 2013. He also served as his team’s primary kick and punt returner, as he returned 23 kicks for a 26.5 average and a touchdown and 15 punts for a 10.4 average and one touchdown. During his pro day, he ran a 4.55 40-yard dash, bench-pressed 225 pounds eight times and posted a vertical jump of 39 1/2 inches.
The Chiefs also signed Tennessee State cornerback David Van Dyke, Tennessee-Martin linebacker Ben Johnson and Abilene Christian running back Charcandrick West.
Van Dyke, who is 6 feet and 185 pounds, was Kiper’s No. 45 cornerback entering the draft. In 2013, Van Dyke had 58 tackles, six pass deflections and four interceptions. During his pro day, he ran a 4.46 40-yard dash, bench-pressed 225 pounds 18 times and posted a vertical jump of 38 1/2 inches.
Johnson, who is 6-1 and 234 pounds, was not listed among Kiper’s top 28 inside linebackers entering the draft. In 2013, he led his team in tackles with 102, had 12 1/2 tackles for loss, three sacks and an interceptions. During his pro day, he ran a 4.60 40-yard dash, bench-pressed 225 pounds 27 times and posted a vertical jump of 36 inches.
West, who is 5-10 and 205 pounds, was not listed among Kiper’s top 71 running backs entering the draft. In 2013, he had 145 carries for 931 yards and 14 touchdowns. During his pro day, he ran a 4.46 40-yard dash, bench-pressed 225 pounds five times and posted a vertical jump of 41 inches.
